Hong Kong states one hundred fifty-nine residents missing were “safe”
Police said the city’s casualty enquiry unit verified the safety of these individuals as the community continues to grieve the victims of one of Hong Kong’s deadliest fires in decades.
Tsang Shuk-yin, head of the casualty enquiry unit, stated that as of 4 p.m. local time (0800GMT) on Sunday, 146 people had died and 79 others were injured in the blaze. She noted that around 100 cases remain untraceable due to incomplete information, non-residency in Wang Fuk Court, or missing addresses for some reported missing persons. Approximately 40 residents are still unaccounted for, with authorities continuing search efforts.
The city began a three-day mourning period on Saturday to honor those killed and injured, which included 12 firefighters among the 79 casualties. Rescue operations entered their fifth day, although the fires in the Wang Fuk Court apartment blocks have largely been brought under control. Officials cautioned that the death toll could rise as more bodies are recovered.
The fire erupted around noon on Wednesday in the complex, which contains over 1,900 apartments, and spread quickly, aided by bamboo scaffolding installed on the exterior for renovation purposes.
